ABOUT DINDIGUL

Dindigul district lies in the interior regions of Tamilnadu and was carved out from Madurai district in 1985. 1) Mannavanur

One needs to take a diversion on way to pillar rock or Berijam Lake. A signage is provided but can be missed if one is not attentive. The stretch is secluded with almost no or limited vehicle movement. So it is advisable to plan the trip during sunlight. It will take 1.5 hrs to reach this place, 2 hrs or more near the lake and another 1.5 hrs to go back. Walking around the lake is the best way to watch birds in this area.

Dindigul - Fort

The Dindigul Fort or Dindigul Malai Kottai is a 17th-century hill fort, built by Madurai Nayak situated in the town of Dindigul in the state of Tamilnadu in India. The fort was built by the Madurai Nayak king Muthu Krishnappa Nayak in 1605. In the 18th century the fort passed on to Kingdom of Mysore (Mysore Wodeyar). During the reign of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan the fort was of strategic importance. In 1799 it went to the control of the British East India Company during the Polygar Wars. Dindigul Fort with its indomitable presence on an isolated rock looms high over Dindigul at a height of 380 meters. The rock spreads out, looking like a pillow and is called 'Dindu Kal' which means pillow rock, and it is from here that Dindigul gets its name.



Begambur Big Mosque

Begambur Big Mosque, a shrine built over 300 years ago, was one of the three mosques built by Hyder Ali in Dindigul. Situated in Begambur, this mosque and the surroundings are named in the memory of Hyder Ali's sister. During his stay in Dindigul, Hyder Ali had built a mosque for himself, one for his soldiers and one for the public and had even granted funds for the maintenance of the mosques. After the death of Ameer-un-Nisha Begum, the younger sister of Hyder Ali and wife of Killedar MirRiza Ali Khan, in 1766 AD, her body was brought here and buried in the premises. Being the more popular mosques, a lot of tourists come here to see the tomb of Ameer-un-Nisha and to offer prayers at the shrine. Though this mosque is open on all days, the best time to visit is during the Jumma prayer on Friday.



Sirumalai - Hill

Sirumalai is a region of 60,000 acres (200 km2) situated 25 km (16 mi) from Dindigul and 40 km (25 mi) from Madurai, Tamilnadu, India. There are many high hills in the area. Hillock International School is located in Sirumalai. Sirumalai is a dense forest region with a moderate climate throughout the year. With an altitude of 1600 metres above sea level, it contains diversified flora and fauna. The hill has 18 hairpin bends. Sirumalai Hills has several scenic natural attractions which are enjoyed by its visitors and make it a popular destination. The hill contains a small waterfall as well. The waterfall goes dry in the summer or in the absence of rain. Good place to spend time with families.



Thadikombu - Perumal Temple

This temple in Thadikombu, a beautiful village 10 km south of Dindigul, is considered to be as sacred as the Kallazhagar Temple near Madurai. Arulmighu Soundarraja Perumal is found in the sleeping posture in this temple and it is said this place was previously known as Thaalamaapuri. Though it is a Vaishnava temple, the sthala vriksha is the vilva tree. Near the river Kudaganaru, sage Mandugar was doing penance. Thalaasuran, a demon, tried to spoil the sage's efforts. Lord Azhagar from Thirumaliruncholai (Azhagar temple) destroyed the demon and protected the sage's penance. The sage prayed to the Lord to stay and bless the devotees and so Azhagar gives darshan as Soundarraja Perumal in this temple. This temple is supposed to be as important as the Azhagar temple near Madurai and history states that it was built 500 years ago by Achutha Devarayar of the Vijayanagar Empire.



Sri Kottai Mariamman Kovil

Kottai Mariamman Temple is a several hundred year old Saivite Temple at Begampur, Dindigul. The goddess idol was installed here by warriors who belonged to Tipu Sultan army at a Peedam. The Temple was constructed several years later. Devotees carry fire pot, light Maa Vilakku and perform Abhishekam and archana to the goddess as their thanks giving. Devotees believed that the goddess will bless them with child boon and save them from prolonged diseases. Sri Kottai Mariamman Kovil is a 200 year old temple which has an idol of Kottai Mariamman, installed by Tipu Sultan. Other important idols in the temple include Lord Vinayaka, Lord Murugan, Goddess Kali, Goddess Durga and Madurai Veeran. It has been constructed in the shape of a square at the fort of the mountain.



Dindigul - Abirami amman Temple

Arulmigu Abirami Amman temple is a holy place situated in Dindigul in Tamil Nadu, India. This is one of the important 'Shivasthalam' were you can find Badmagiriswarar - Abirami Amman and Kalahastheeswarar - Gnanambigai Sannathi's. There was no shrine for Ambica in the beginning. Mother Kali came here to destroy a demon named Analan and was very furious. Lord Shiva softened Her fury and married Her. She looked very alluring then and therefore, was named Abhirami Ambica. A festival remembering the furious Kali destroying the demon and her wedding with Shiva is celebrated during Chithirai month - April-May. Though a Shiva sthala-place, Ambicas occupy a prominent place. The temple is popularly known as Abhirami temple.



Dindigul - St.Joseph Church

Saint Joseph Church was constructed between the years 1866 to 1872. This 100 year old church is at the head of all the existing Roman Catholic Churches in the district of Dindigul and hence is one of the most important religious places of the region. It is the head quarters of Dindigul diocese of Roman Catholic Churches in Dindigul. Which is evident from the glass works and special artistic work all over the church. The church is attractive, the appearance is of a clean, white, striking church, but red pillars hold a section of the church up.



Nadupatti - Anjaneyar Temple

Nadupatti Anjaneyar Temple is situated in the Nilakottai Taluk alongside a river. This temple is located at a distance of 35 Kms from Dindigul. This can be reached from Madurai also. This Temple is located near river side. Most of the time, the statue will be immersed in water.
