ABOUT MUNNAR

Munnar was the summer capital of the British in southern India. Munnar was developed to cultivate tea plants by British although it was first discovered by Scottish planters. One of the main attractions of Munnar Neelakurinji (Strobilanthes kunthiana) is a shrub that used to grow abundantly in the shola grasslands of Western Ghats in India. The Nilgiris, which literally means the blue mountains, got its name from the purplish blue flowers of Neelakurinji that blossoms gregariously once in 12 years. One can also view the Idukki Arch Dam which is situated 60 kms from Pothamedu View Point when sky is clear. Pothamedu View Point has a panoramic view of adjoining valley and river Muthirapuzha. It has an ideal view for photographers as well as leisure travellers. August to May is the preferable time to visit the Pothamedu View Point. Vehicles crawling up the serpentine road from Kochi appear to be minute when viewed from the Pothamedu View Point.



Attukal Waterfalls

Located at a distance of 9 kms from Munnar, the Attukal Waterfalls has an enticing view of pearly white water flowing, streaming and gushing all its way. Located around places like the Chinnar Wildlife sanctuary, the Cheeyappara Waterfalls and Rose Garden situated near Munnar, Attukal Waterfalls finds a convenient location. One can reach to the Attukal Waterfalls through a narrow wooden bridge. The ice water flows around a steady cadence and is surrounded by mist. At times, the mist surrounds the entire region of the Attukal Waterfalls and the water gushing becomes foggy and translucent. Top Station

Top Station, located around 32 km away from Munnar, is the highest point (1700m) in Munnar, on the Munnar-Kodaikkanal road. The place falls on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border. Here you can enjoy the panoramic view of Western Ghats and the valley of Theni district of Tamil Nadu. Top Station got its name from the fact that it was the uppermost railway station located in the Kundala Valley. At this highest point, you may feel that the clouds are just a hand touch away from you. The destination is famous for the Neelakurinji flowers (Strobilanthus), which used to bloom once in twelve years. The bloom of these rare flowers will give the destination a different bluish look. The next flowering season of Neelakurinji is on 2018. The best time to visit Top station is from April to May. You can also visit the Kurinjimala sanctuary very near to top Station.



Echo Point

This is a very beautiful place in Munnar, which got its name from natural echo phenomenon situated at a scenic lake bank. When you scream at here, you will be hearing your voice returning to you. Placed at an altitude about 600 ft, Echo Point is located 15 km away from Munnar, on the way to Top Station. Echo Point always has a greenish look as it is covered with abundant green sceneries. It is an adventurous destination, which will be a perfect choice for those who love to have a nature walk or trekking. The place surrounded with mist covered hills, water falls and clean air will be a visual treat.



Kundala Lake

Kundala is a picturesque place, about 20 km from Munnar on the way to Top Station. It is at a height of 1700 meters above sea level. It is located at a distance of 20 kilometKundala dam, munnarers from Munnar. In Kundala, cherry blossoms appear twice in a year. The famous Neela Kurunji flowers which bloom once in twelve years, bloom in the hills and valleys around Kundala lake. There is an artificial dam in Kundala which is another major attraction here. It is Asia’s first Arch dam. The boating experience at this dam is a wonderful experience beyond words. Boating facilities namely pedal boats, Kashmiri shikkara boats and row boats are available on rent to make your trip more enjoyable.



Mattupetty Dam

Nestled inside the hills of Munnar and very near to the Anamudi peak lies Mattupetty, the hill station at a height of 1,700 m. Mattupetty is located 13 km away from Munnar. Here you can enjoy the greenish valleys and feel the fabulous climate around. The main attraction of Mattupetty is the dam and the lake here. The dam of Mattupetty is a storage concrete gravity dam. The dam was constructed under the Pallivasal Hydro-electric project in the late 1940s, for the purpose of water conservation and power generation. Now the dam is a vital source of electricity generation in Munnar and also a haven for many wild animals and birds due to its constant water availability. The most attractive part of Mattupetty dam is its still water which reflects the tea garden around.



Eravikulam National Park

It is an ideal place for seeing the biodiversity of high elevation shola-grassland ecosystem. Visitors are taken to Rajamalai in forest dept vehicles and given an opportunity to see all this. Private vehicles are not allowed here. The National Park is usually closed at the time of calving of Nilgiri Tahr which is usually during the early months of every year. A sanctuary for the endangered mountain goat of South India, the Nilgiri Tahr (Hemitragus hylocrious), the Eravikulam National Park stands out for the stark beauty of its rolling grasslands and sholas, spread over 97 sq km in the Kannan devan hills. Rajamalai is the tourism zone of the National Park, where the visitors are taken in forest dept vehicles and introduced to the shola - grassland eco system unique to this region.



Marayoor Dolmens

The Muniyara Dolmens are magnificent prehistoric dolmens, situated in Marayoor, approximately 55 kms from Munnar. Belongs to the Neolithic Age, these aboveground burial chambers are built with large stone slabs and are called 'megaliths.' The historians keep special interest in these granite slabs as they are more than thousand years old. A lot of anthropologists and archaeologists from all over the world visit this fascinating destination to explore the remnants of Dolmenoid cists belonging to the Megalithic age. The tourists trek through the area of Muniyara to reach 15 different types of Dolmens, which belongs to the Neolithic Age, i.e. between 3000 BC and 14000 BC. Some of the dolmens here even belong to the Iron Age, which is proven by the smoothed rocky stone slabs that can only be done with iron tools.



Anamudi

The literal meaning of Anamudi is “Elephants Foreheads” arising from the fact that the peak is home to largest surviving population of Asian elephants, Gaurs and Nilgiri Tahrs. Anamudi is also known as Anai Mudi and has a topographic prominence of 2,479 metres. The Anamudi peak is famous for trekking expedition in Munnar. The peak is 2,695 metres elevated above the ground. Anamudi is the highest peak in Western Ghats and South India and is situated in Eravikulam National Park. Anamudi Peak is the highest peak outside the Himalayan mountain ranges. The Anamudi peak is also surrounded with Arundinaria densifolia, Gaultheria fragrantissima and Anaphalis sp.Bamboos, black wood and teak trees are found in abundance in the green forest surrounding the Anamudi Peak. The peak is famous for Neela Kurinji flower which blossoms every twelve years.



Indo Swiss Diary Farm

This is a highly specialized Mattuppetty Dairy Farm which comes under Indo-Swiss Livestock Project. Hundreds of high quality cattle are reared here and new varieties are scientifically developed. Mattupetty Indo Swiss Farm, spread over an area of 191 hectares, is famous for cattle farming. The farm is home to around hundreds varieties of high quality cattle and about 400 heads of cattle are reared here. The farm is part of the Indo-Swiss Project headquartered at Mattupetty. Located amidst green grasslands, Indo Swiss Project at 3 km away from Mattupetty Dam is devoted to cattle development and research centre set up by the Government of Switzerland. The project was launched in 1963 on the basis of a bilateral agreement executed between the Swiss Confederation and the Government of India.

It is a chain of waterfalls in the Deviyar River that originates from the Western Ghats. Meesapulimala

Meesapulimala is a peak in high ranges of Western Ghats in the Idukki District of Kerala. Standing tall at 2,640 metres above sea level, it is the second highest peak in South India. Western Ghats is a mountain range along the western side of India stretching from Maharashtra to Kerala. It is considered as a hotspot of biodiversity and has been declared a UNESCO world heritage site. On this trek to Meesapulimala, we walk through the high altitude grasslands and mountain rainforest ecosystem that is unique to the Western Ghats. While ascending Meesapulimala, enjoy breathtaking views of the vast plains of Tamil Nadu to your east and the never ending Sahyadri to your west. We start the trek from an altitude of 1,500 meters, gradually climbing to over 2,600m, passing through sholas (high altitude rain forests) and grasslands which are typical to the higher areas of the Western Ghats.
